2002 with no one stepping to the helm to take control of a fading league,
Chris Boutet attempted to keep CBA alive, bringing several GM's from his QSBL
league. He also attempted to complete the season, however several times
during the season council member and one of CBA's early founders Marc Wasserman
helped to run games and keep things organized.
To stimulate interest in the league Boutet took several controversial votes
which changed existing usage and rotational requirements. Usage maximums
were set at 115%, Starters who were asterisked or 200+ inn, could start every
three days with no maximums for usage. Batters with 450 AB unlimited, etc.
The result was a statistical nightmare which CBA's statistical database still
hasn't recovered from. Many 400+ inn pitchers , and unlimited hitters,
exorbitant team stat totals offensive records and pitching records were skewed.
Addtionally there were several long breaks between blocks, and several file
mishaps which caused extensive delays and much frustration with the veteran
GM's.
At the end of 2002, going into 2003, Boutet resigned from the temporary post.
Marc Wasserman organized a committee and asked co-founder Gerald Benoit to
re-enter CBA and assume responsibilty as commissioner, and team owner with
Wasserman as co-commisioner. Benoit accepted and took the Acadie Stars and
renamed them the Montreal Royals (Skokie) and soon found the task monumental.
Apathy being the major problem in 2002, Both decided to take a different and
radical direction for CBA to restore staistical integrity, enthusiasm, and
schedule consistency to CBA. Resolved that to create a stronger league
there must be a bit of a redistribution of talent. New GM's would be
brought in to replace leaving ones and non-performing GM's. A massive
recruitment drive was spearheaded by Wasserman to retool the GM lineup for the
2003 season.

Two of CBA's most successful franchises met in a date with destiny, Limoilou
and Philly. The 1997, 1999 champion and always a major force Limoilou. As
close to a dynasty as you can get, Limoilou Wendigo managed by Jeff Boutet was
a charter member with a proven track record. Dawson was taken by the Wendigo
in 1997 and Brooklyn in 1998 after a 4 way battle between Brooklyn, the
Wendigo, Claude LaMarre's Longue Pointe, and Chris Boutet's Quebec Capitales. With
Brooklyn's relocation to Clemente in 1999, The Limoilou squad took the Dawson
and won their way to a CBA championship. Limoilou simply was the dominant
force in Staub in terms of winning consistancy. The battles between the
Quebecois LP, Quebec, and Limoilou were terrific and many chatroom games took
place with high tension and big moments along the way. Games were often
'attended' by other members adding to the drama.
Although The Wendigo were considered yearly as the team to beat in Staub, so
Philly was regarded in Clemente. Philly had some lean years in 97 and 98 but
was an active team building by acquiring picks and drafting and lots of
strategic trading. Rob Hite acquired a reputation and an astute talent judge
and was well known as perhaps CBA's most active delear (Although Wayne McGee
can be made a case for as easily) Philly had built a formidable lineup and had
a future Hall of Famer dominanting the Clemente Cy Young and ballgames named
Randy Johnson. Johnson who owns many CBA pitching records led the Phantastics
who grew rapidly into a powerhouse. Hite's Philly played Longue Pointe for the
2000 championship losing but destined to return. After a 1 year buildup,
Philly returned to defeat the Wendigo in 2002 with one of CBA's all time
performing teams. Philly later went on to the ESSOM Friendship Cup tournament
where they scored a 4th place showing for the best team in Cyberpsace.
Here's a few boxes and recaps from the 2002 World Series. The series lasted 5
games.

Randy Johnson reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts and first baseman Jason
Giambi blasted 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Veterans Stadium as the Philly
Phantastics beat the Limoilou Wendigo by the count of 9 to 6.
Giambi had a great evening at the plate. He had the crowd cheering his every
move. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning, rifled a three-run
blast in the 3rd inning and blasted a solo shot (his 6th of the season) in
the 7th inning. Johnson(4-1) got help from Byung-Hyun Kim who pitched great
and earned his 3rd save.
Curt Schilling(4-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 4 homeruns in 6 innings of
work. Jeff Boutet was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but
did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'

Derek Jeter slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Philly Phantastics topped
the Limoilou Wendigo by a score of 8 to 6 at Enron Field.
Darryl Kile(2-1) had a fairly solid outing. He went 6 innings allowing 7 hits
and 4 walks. Limoilou was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5
separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that
pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
Kile was helped out by Byung-Hyun Kim who recorded his 4th save. Doug
Creek(0-1) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of
an inning.
Philly now has a record of a league leading 10-5. With this loss, Limoilou
has a 6-4 record of late, 9-6 overall.
