CBA All Time Records

From the League Office.

Welcome visitors to the 2007 World Series of CBA Page.  This year we had two well respected managers with proven track records meet.  While Rob Hite has built many successful CBA teams over the years and won a championship, the legendary "Wolfman" has also won tournaments in face to face Strat-o-matic.  Through the game we love, and Netplay, both managers can showdown 'head to head' online for the right to named a true International Strat-o-matic baseball champion.  CBA's Skokie representative resides in the Netherlands while Rob Hite reside on the east coast of the United States.  Although not CBA's only international W.S., this marks "Wolfman's" first appearance in a championship in quite some time.  Rob had previously won CBA's 2002 title, and later the next year placed 4th in Steve Beren's Friendship Cup tournament out of many teams in the Strat Universe that year.

The Philly Phantastics have made quite a mark on CBA.  Philly has perrenially been known for its outstanding slugging and team batting.   Philly holds the record for most wins ever in a season 120 in 2000 the year they lost to Claude LaMarre's Longue Pointe team in a upset.  They had three 100 win seasons in a row from 2000-2002.  But In 2002 they won 115 and went on to win the CBA WS.  Both WS teams own the CBA record for highest ever winning percentage.  Philly owns 4 of the top 10 single season team batting averages by season.  They hit a CBA record .317 in 2005.  Philly owns the top 3 all time runs scored by season with a high of 1225 in championship 2000.  Offense has defined the slugging Philly's.  Philly is the #1 and 2 in hits with a high in 2005 of 1887.  Its amazing to think that Philly even holds 4 of the top strikeout pitching teams of all time too.  In no small part due to Randy Johnson, and Rob's penchant for drafting strikeout pitchers.  Philly defeated Conference rival Brooklyn this year, who also has had good success and huge offensive numbers.  In their last appearance, Philly had lost in the 2005 World Series to Longue Pointe in a rematch of their 2000 classic.  Before that they had been to the playoffs each year from 2000-2003.  They played in the 2000, 2002, 2005, and now the 2007 World Series.  Quite a history for Rob Hite future CBA HOF'er.

The Wolfman is well known in Strat-o-matic circles and certainly amongst old timer Strat community.  Hardly a month of the old Strat review went by without the references to our Skokie Wolfman.  A tournament competitor and founder, Wolfman known then as Rick "Wolfman" Shapiro brought a great deal of competition and spirit to the 1970-80's Strat community.  You can go to his Skokie Homepage and read more about him on his website link.  His organization and personality has contributed a great deal to our community and on a smaller scale to our CBA league.  Wolfman is known in CBA for his trades.  They seem to come in waves at a rapid pace.  It was said in CBA by one GM, about his deals "whether you like them or not, they make other GM's buzz". His trades have put Skokie on the map in CBA.  CBA recognizes winners, and for the longest time the franchise lay dormant marked by ineptitude and poor seasons.  Shapiro has remodeled his team mainly through his trades into a World Series participant.  It took 3 years whereas some GM's are still seeking a 1st trip after 11 long years.  Some argued that he mortgaged his future with his movement of draft choices, but the results can't be denied.  The 87 win season could likely had been more save for some usage difficulties.  But make no mistake this team was built to win now.  They made it all the way to the WS winning the Staub Conference Championship along the way.  But could they beat Philly?

Originally Skokie was first drafted as the Bodega bay Mad Birds.  League owner Gerald Benoit's own team.  They enjoyed modest success though never been to a playoff.  Closest was Mario Fleming's forgotten Vermont Expos 2002 team who went 85-77.  Gerald Benoit resurrected his old team in 2003 until 2005 when Wolfman took the reins.  Its all or nothing. Who won win this years crown? Well......

Wild Card entry

Rob Hite Has won the CBA crown over the Skokie Wolfman 4 games to 2.  Of note, game 6 was an all time CBA final WS game classic.  It lasted 16 innings before the CBA's all time Hit leader Derek Jeter drove home two runs for a 3-1 lead which Philly's Rafael Soriano held on to win.  Congratulations to original CBA member since 1997 Rob Hite.  Hite has now won 2 CBA titles in 2002, and 2007.  He has appeared many times in the playoffs but this one could be his sweetest victory of em all since this year he was not as dominant as 2002 or years past.  Hite had taken his team from last place to WS and beat a legend in a classic battle of wits... We expect more details of the inner workings and strategies from the series in a short time including commentary from both managers.  Wolfman and Rob were classy and sportsmen throughout their tenure in CBA.  They truly represent CBA high standards with fair, ethical, and high caliber play.      Stay tuned...

the first game was unbelievable a 9-8 win by Skokie
in 11 innings coming from behind but unfortunately
the magic left Skokie in game two as the Philly
hit  machine seems unstoppable, not even Clemens
could hold them as they tie the series with a 7-3 win

The much anticipated 2007 CBA World Series opened up in Skokie, with the
surprise Clemente Wild Card entry Philly Phantastics facing off against the
heavily favored Staub Wild Card entry Skokie Wolfmen.  It was billed as an
epic battle pitting the exceptional Wolfmen pitching staff against the
offense-laden Philly team.  Early on in Game 1 Philly's offense certainly
lived up to their reputation, putting up a 7 spot in the top of the first
inning before Skokie would have a chance to bat.  Philly's shaky pitching
staff quickly reared its ugly head, allowing Skokie to claw their way back
into the game and cap off the amazing comeback with 4 in the 9th to send the
contest into extra innings.   Francisco Liriano, Philly's 7th pitcher on the
day, had been nearly unhittable in the post-season up until this day.  But
his luck would run out, as Skokie rallied to push a single run home in the
bottom of the 11th to forge Skokie ahead 1 game to none with the 8-7
victory.

Rich Aurilia blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Skokie Wolfmen beat the
Philly Phantastics in 11 innings by a score of 9 to 8.

The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings.  Skokie came out on top in
the
11th inning.  Jack Wilson ripped a base-knock.  Luke Hudson next to the
plate
and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Gary Matthews Jr then was walked
intentionally.  Mark Grudzielanek came up and he laced a base-knock making
Skokie the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Skokie had
16 hits for the game and Philly had 11.

The win went to Hudson(2-1) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning. The
losing pitcher was Francisco Liriano(1-1) in relief.  When questioned, Josh
Shapiro remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's
been a while since we had a win period!'

The Philly offense began Game 2 in the same manner that they opened Game 1,
jumping ahead 3-0 before the Wolfmen even stepped to the plate.  The big
blow today was a 3-run 1st inning blast by JD Drew, the much ballyhooed
trading deadline acquisition from Brooklyn who has done absolutely nothing
during Philly's post-season run.   But he made his first homer of the
post-season a clutch one, and Philly's other trade deadline acquisition
Dontrelle Willis tossed 7 strong innings to lead the Phantastics to the 7-3
victory in Game 2.  Skokie veteran ace Roger Clemens was hit hard, giving up
9 hits and 7 earned runs in the defeat.  The series now shifts to
Philadelphia for three, with Skokie and Philly tied at one game apiece.

crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 1st of the season).  Philly
had a total of 10 hits for the game.

Mark Grudzielanek had 3 base hits at Ameriquest Field where the Skokie Wolfmen
beat the Philly Phantastics 7 to 5.

Skokie had 5 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning with the help
of 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Jason Giambi who deflated the mood
of the partisan fans when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 4th of the
season). Skokie had 12 hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Chien-Ming Wang(4-1) who went 5 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Joe Nathan was credited with his 5th save. The losing
pitcher was Cole Hamels(0-2).

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Wang, 'I got burned on a
couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
