I'm Joe Wallace, 60 years old and a Southern Californian. Born and raised in
San Diego, I continue to make the area my home base although business travels
often take me to all corners of the globe for extended periods of time. In
recent years I've spent quite a bit of time at manufacturing and research
sites in Japan, South Korea, and calling on business partners throughout the
United State and Pacific rim. Outside of work and strat-o-matic gaming, I
enjoy time on the water, golfing, tennis, and traveling with the family. My
lovely wife and I have 2 adult daughters, and we're very excited to have our
first grandchild on the way.
I'm a proud CBA member for 17 yrs now, and have enjoyed the challenge of
building the lovable loser I inherited into a frequent winner. While we have
not won the big championship trophy as of yet, we enjoy the challenge of
trying to field a strong contender each and every year while working hard to
follow the minor league systems in hopes of unearthing some future gems. Every
year, I expect to draft the next Kershaw or Trout, but usually end up
disappointing the loyal fans of San Diego with my selections. I wasn't much of
a baseball player growing up, in fact I was a bench warmer for my high school
team. So maybe I don't know baseball talent when I see it. But I sure do have
fun trying.
The 2018 edition of the Surf has a lot of young talent and surprising power
potential for the future. After trading decade-long franchise MVP Robbie Cano
for up and infield comer Alex Bregman, we are proud to put him on our 2018
media guide as the cornerstone of our young nucleus. Appearing alongside Alex
on the media guide cover are our two feared veteran sluggers, Giancarlo
Stanton and Josh Donaldson, and our 2nd year slugging backstop Gary Sanchez.
Together, this fearsome foursome make for a very formidable middle of the
lineup in the competitive Carter division. We are also excited about our other
dynamic young roadrunners in the outfield, Manuel Margot and Byron Buxton.
Defensively, they can go get anything that's hit out there and we expect our
outfield defense to be 2nd to none this year. Margot and Buxton are also
quickly developing into all-start offensively, and the future looks very
bright with them as part of our nucleus.
San Diego's team identity has always been pitching and defense, so we've
attempted to bolster our rotation over these past few seasons. We are proud to
feature 5 young arms in this year's rotation for whom the sky is the limit.
Eduardo Rodriguez, Tyler Glasnow, Martin Perez, Luke Weaver, and Jake Odirozzi
are all between 24 and 27 years old with their best years and best stuff yet
to come. As always, we hope that the pleasant San Diego weather and our
innovative 6 man rotation help us keep all of our arms healthy. Health is the
key to everything. We believe that we can be back in championship contention
within a year if everybody stays on the field and avoids the knife.

Josh Bard smacked 2 homeruns as the San Diego Surf crushed
the Indiana
Redbirds 23 to 4.
Bard was unconscious all evening. The Indiana fans
hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering
base hits! He singled
which plated a run in the 3rd inning, doubled knocking in
a run in the 3rd
inning, delivered a one-base hit which plated a run in the
5th inning,
launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 6th inning and
depressed the partisan
hometown fans with a grand slam home run (his 4th of the
season) in the 7th
inning. San Diego bats were hot in the 3rd inning
with 8 runs on 8 hits and
the 7th inning plating 5 runs. San Diego finished
with 18 hits while Indiana
ended up with 11.
The win was credited to Jake Peavy(16-8) who went 8 and
1/3 innings allowing 4
runs. John Smoltz(10-15) was tagged with the loss.
He gave up 5 runs in 2
innings of work.
'I had good swings tonight,' Bard said, 'Everything felt
right'.
