Clemente Championships 2006

Indiana Wins Clemente title 4 games to 2.

THE RED BIRD GAZETTE

Reported by: Skip Duckworth

This is Skip Duckworth as we are setting down with the Clemente league champions Indiana Red Bird mgr. Bob Fidler

Skip: First thing I want to say is congratulations

Bob: Thanks a lot Skip and we want to say thank you mgr Marc Wass on a great series as it was a close one even if it doesn’t look that way.

Skip: Well can you tell us about the last two games that were played since the last time we spoke.

Bob: Yes Skip, Game 5 of course was the last game to be played in Brooklyn and they had their backs to the wall. Both teams scored a run in the second inning and Brooklyn scored another one in the bottom of the third that proved to be the game winner. Then Sammy Sosa put the game away with a long 2 run blast in the 7th inning. We had runners on but just couldn’t seem to get a big hit. I was getting to think we used everything up in that game 3.

Skip: Well you still came home with a 3-2 games lead you should had felt good about that.

Bob: Yes I did I think the off day was great advantage and to come home and play in front of the great Red Bird fans in the Bird Cage.

Skip: Well tell us about game 6 which ended up being the clincher.

Bob: We had Oswalt going against Colon, we took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd 1-0  but Brooklyn came back with a 3 spot in the top of the 3rd. Albert came up in the bottom of the 3rd with Reyes on and hit a upper deck shot to tie the game up. In the top of the 4th Brooklyn recaptured the lead with a run then finally in the bottom of the 5th we were able to 2 across and then another in the 7th. Hoffman came in to finish it off and he didn’t seem to have his best stuff starting out and he let Brooklyn score the 2 runs to tie it. Trevor was really upset with himself but I told don’t worry about your team mates will pick you up. He kept it close then Ray King who hadn’t made an appearance in the playoffs came in to get 2 outs in the 11th. Toby Hall lead off with a single and we debated if we should pinch run but decided against hit and try to hit and run with Iguchi but he swung at a bad pitch and popped it up. Brooklyn then brought in Villone to pitch to Grady who we have all the confidence if he is facing a LH pitcher, he laced a double down the right field line. 3rd base coach Ken Reitz held Hall up with one out knowing we have Polanco coming up and Albert on deck. Brooklyn brought in Rivera to try and get the strike out but he left a curve ball in the middle of the plate and Placido was able to hit it up the middle to give us the 7-6 victory.

Skip: Congratulation on a great series and got get that World Series Champions

Bob: Thanks Skip and I know my team will do their best, as it says in the dugout Play like a Champion.

Well this is Skip Duckworth signing off and we have one last thing to say GO RED BIRDS!

Jason Bay cracked 3 homeruns and Roy Oswalt completed the game without help
from the bullpen as the Indiana RedBirds man-handled the Brooklyn Superbas -
the final score was 36 to 3.
Bay propelled Indiana to victory.  He slapped a base-hit in the 1st inning,
ripped a base-knock bringing in a run in the 2nd inning, ripping a solo home
run in the 4th inning, smacked a single in the 7th inning, cleared the bases
with a Grand Slam homerun in the 7th inning, laced a one-base hit in the 8th
inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 5th of the season)
in the 8th inning.  Indiana provided plenty of action in the 7th inning when
they had 9 runs on 7 hits and the 8th inning with 12 runs on 10 hits.  The
Indiana offense was great, scoring in 8 of the 9 innings.
The victory went to Oswalt(2-2) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Roy
Halladay(1-1) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 9 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3
innings.
'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Bay said.  'We
played well together as a team.'

The Indiana RedBirds nipped the Brooklyn Superbas in 11 innings 7 to 6 at US
Cellular Field in a hard fought contest.

The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. Finally, Indiana pulled the
game out in the 11th inning. Toby Hall stroked a single. After an out was
recorded, Grady Sizemore came up and he doubled. Placido Polanco then lined
a base-hit making Indiana the victors to the delight of the home town
faithful. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed
hands 5 times.

Ray King(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Shigetoshi
Hasegawa(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and no
walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.
